Dr.Martens boots – Shoes that came from war zone to become a youth culture icon

Dr. Martens is an English footwear and clothing brand. In addition to Dr. Martens, they are also known as Doc Martens, Docs or DMs. The footwear is known by its air-cushioned sole (dubbed Bouncing Soles) and yellow stitching. The boots have been the choice of footwear among various groups in British culture: “Docs” or “DMs” being the usual naming, and by the late 1980s, they were popular among scooter riders, punks, goths, some new wave musicians, and members of other youth subcultures, most notably the grunge fashion scene in the early nineties.

History of Dr. Martens shoes begins after the war. Klaus Märtens was a doctor in the German army during World War II. While on leave in 1945, he injured his ankle while skiing in the Bavarian Alps. He found that his standard-issue army boots were too uncomfortable on his injured foot. Using discarded rubber from Luftwaffe airfields, quality leather and yellow stiches a new style of shoes were created and in a few years shoes were produced in a new Munich factory. In 1989 British factory bought manufacturing rights for Dr. Martens shoes and the rest is history. Shoe brand became a steady part of British youth culture.
